Lethal Silence - Ada Fang

Ada came with her class to a writing workshop in July 2011. The class wrote the beginning of Lethal Silence together (in italics below), then finished it on their own.

As the spaceship hurtled towards earth, Gordon let out a terrifying scream. He was about to land in Santa’s workshop. He thought of life back on his home planet, Mars, where he had an endless supply of space candy and life was good.

Gordon was a slug-like Martian with seven eyes and sunglasses. His irises and body could change colour whenever he liked. He was sent from Mars to brainwash the innocent things who live on earth. Gordon got out of the spaceship and saw lots of elves. He thought they were leprechauns and had already been brainwashed.

Making a joke, he said, ‘I come in pieces.’

The elves stared at him blankly.

He said, ‘Resistance is futile.’

The elves looked at him even more blankly.

He held a piece of space candy and said,‘If you can understand me, you can have this.’ All the elves went to grab the candy. After they started eating it they felt a bit sick.

Santa came in and asked, ‘Who is doing this to my elves?’

Suddenly a big ball of fire hurtled through the atmosphere and out of it jumped Bob. Bob had wings and was an alien in disguise. He had come to save the earth and stop Gordon.

Gordon tried to run but Bob had crept behind and placed some handcuffs on him. They were special handcuffs because if they weren’t, Gordon could have easily melted them and escaped.

Bob was a short plump man with a moustache and small golden wings. He quickly got onto a private flight to America. Police were always surrounding Gordon wherever he went. But when he had to go to the toilet he secretly crept into the pilot’s area and brainwashed them. He redirected the route of the plane and cut the engines, he turned off the radio and took all the parachutes and life jackets and jumped.

Bob got scared when he saw the plane plummeting down and so he went to the pilot’s cockpit to investigate but they were sleeping in the corner. Bob tried flying the plane but he knew he couldn’t. He then buckled on his seatbelt tight and braced for impact.

CRASH!

Four hours later: Bob had regained consciousness. He called the police and told them about Gordon. Now every police station was aware of Gordon and if they saw him they would arrest him. Bob then called the hospital and they took him away.

When Gordon had jumped off the plane he had landed in a luxurious mansion facing Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. He didn’t have any money or shelter so he went inside and brainwashed the owners. He now had this beautiful home to himself.

Gordon was making a potion so he could poison Sydney’s water supply and then everybody would be brainwashed.

Gordon would be so powerful!

The police weren’t bothering to find Gordon so Bob went out to find Gordon himself. Bob quickly flew back with his golden wings to the plane crash area where he could find the video camera recording when Gordon had jumped off the plane. As he searched through the debris, he found it! Bob watched it and saw that Gordon had jumped just around Bondi Beach. He now had a lead so he quickly flew to Bondi Beach. ‘YES!’ Gordon shouted to himself. He had made a potion to brainwash people but he had to test it first. So Gordon set up a lemonade stand in front of his house. Quickly lots of people began drinking the free poisoned lemonade. As they drank and drank he saw that some people had become drowsy and forgetful. He now knew that he had made the potion right. He could now gain control of Sydney and then the WORLD!

Bob had already arrived at Bondi Beach and found Gordon’s scent. Because he was also a Martian he could smell Gordon’s scent from a mile away. He traced him back to a fancy mansion so Bob crept in secretly, but he was so thirsty he grabbed some free lemonade at the stand in front of the house and drank. After half a minute he felt very drowsy and forgetful. He then collapsed into a deep sleep. Gordon was already at Sydney’s water supply. He poured some of the brainwashing liquid in. All he had to do now was do the same to all the other water supplies around the world.

Two months later: Gordon had returned to Mars. He’d found Bob lying brainwashed in front of his mansion in Sydney, so he had taken Bob back home too. Gordon was excited as The Great Martian Awards were going to be announced and Gordon was a finalist. He was up against the king’s son.

And the winner is . . . MY SON!’ the king said, ‘for his amazing brainwashing scheme!’ There was a long and lethal silence when they had realised many people booed and were angry. Gordon was mad like crazy! His whole body turned red and was glowing with rage. He ran back to his house and packed a suitcase of his belongings and took the memories of the people on earth with him.

Gordon returned to earth and he poured all of the people’s memories back into the water supply of every country. He felt he was doing the right thing restoring everybody’s memories.

One year later: Everybody’s memories had returned. Gordon had fallen in love with Sydney and he stayed living in his beautiful mansion. Everybody liked him and cared about him. He was accepted for who he was and his ideas were used to help human beings instead of brainwashing them. He got the recognition he deserved and life was happy on earth for him.

But not so much for Bob, who was stuck in prison on Mars forever.

In her own words: “‘My name is Ada Fang. My family consists of a Martian-like sister, caring mother, nerdy dad and a crazy dog. I love reading on the weekends in bed when it’s cold and raining outside and my dog Bibi is sleeping at the end of the bed. I also like reading late at night with a torch on. I like ice-skating, sports and maths. My school Alexandria Park Community School is AWESOME because we have a kitchen so we can hold Mini-Masterchef, a cool science lab to make explosions and great friends.”

Ada’s story was published in I Met a Martian and Other Stories, the Sydney Story Factory’s first official anthology.
